3 playersOTTAWA - Andre Burakovsky was brought to Ottawa to provide some much-needed offence. Just five games into his Senators career, the veteran forward is already trying to work his way back into the lineup.
After sitting out two consecutive games as a healthy scratch, Burakovsky will return Saturday night against the New York Rangers, skating on the fourth line alongside Stephen Halliday and Nick Cousins.
The Senators acquired Burakovsky during the offseason despite a difficult finish to his time in Chicago, where he managed just four points in his final 37 games.
General manager Steve Staios believed a change of scenery could help the Stanley Cup champion and two-time 20-goal scorer rediscover his offensive touch, particularly with the opportunity to play alongside more talented players in Ottawa.
So far, the results haven't been encouraging.
Through five games, Burakovsky has yet to score and has registered just two shots on goal. His struggles led head coach Travis Green to remove him from the lineup for two games.
Burakovsky acknowledges that adjusting to Ottawa's style of play has been a challenge.
"It's hard, it takes a little bit of time. We are playing a completely different type of hockey than what I did last year in Chicago,” Burakovsky said.
Green indicated the coaching staff continues to work with Burakovsky to help him adjust to the Senators' system.
“It’s been fine," Green said of working with Burakovsky. “Watches a lot of videos. Some good conversation.”
"Keep him confident, explain to him the process and be honest with him about where he's at in his head with his game and what we're seeing, and to stick with it.”
For Burakovsky, Saturday represents another opportunity to establish himself in Ottawa's lineup.
The Senators were hoping the 31-year-old could provide secondary scoring when they acquired him. Instead, he's trying to regain his confidence and earn a more prominent role.
With Ottawa looking for more production throughout its lineup, getting Burakovsky back on track would be a welcome development.
